Nine thousand six hundred refugees from Zambia were returned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a voluntary repatriation process.
The exercises, which began in December last year, also saw eight Burundians repatriated.
Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Gillian Triggs confirmed this at a press conference in Lusaka.
Ms. Triggs also said that two Angolan refugees had volunteered to be repatriated.
She praised Zambia for its hospitality towards refugees.
Meanwhile, Ms. Triggs confirmed social media reports that the Commission has a budget shortfall of $700m.
She said that the deficit, if not mitigated, will negatively affect UNHCR’s operations worldwide.
